And the reasons for the miffing are not always clear to me. McPhee’s sentences are as varied as the geographic features he so often describes: some move at a glacial pace, some jut up unexpectedly like exposed granite, others gooseneck like snaking streams, still others burn like understory, quick, dangerous. Of course it brings you all together in different social media but, for example, for some years now I haven’t needed to be in New York when a piece was published. I look for real people who are interesting that I can describe, and the places where they live and work, and so forth, and try to do a sketch of that. There are 50 million possibilities.
